Ashford, Kent – Autumn 1999
View looking north-west towards Ashford Station during the early stages of construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL)
The former Ashford Railway Works are visible in the foreground, with extensive rail realignment, earthworks, and temporary infrastructure marking the beginning of the transformation of the station area to accommodate high-speed services. Surrounding residential neighbourhoods and the rural edge of the town remain largely unchanged from their pre-expansion form.
At the time this photograph was taken, Ashford was undergoing one of the most significant periods of change in its modern history. The introduction of high-speed rail services required extensive reconstruction of existing railway infrastructure, much of which would disappear entirely once the project was completed.
